The best drain cleaner for grease is Endure by American Formula, a Bacillus bacterial drain cleaner that converts organic drain clogs into carbon dioxide gas. Endure's active ingredients worked on grease buildup for 30 days between applications, defeating 13 other enzymatic and chemical drain cleaners in our study.
BioOne Liquid Drain and Septic Treatment ranked just behind Endure for long-term effectiveness and maintenance. Instant Power Bio-Enzymatic Drain Sticks, our third-place finisher, are a retail-store pick available at Lowe’s and Tractor Supply Company.
Bacterial and enzyme drain cleaner products ranked above all chemical drain cleaner products in both overall effectiveness and duration of clear pipes. Non-toxic cleaners aren't just healthier for homeowners- they're definitely the best drain cleaners for grease and organic clogs in kitchen sink drains.
Mother Modern Plumbing's team of seven licensed Master Plumbers oversaw this 60-day study. We evaluated and applied 14 drain cleaner products on both detached drain pipe materials and in real-world sink drain applications.

The Master Plumbers Who Reviewed Them

Mother Modern Plumbing featured a team of seven Master Plumbers during this study. They were led by Responsible Master Plumber Steven Smith (RMP-43457), a Fort Worth-based contractor with 16+ years of residential plumbing service.
They were supported by Mother's licensed plumbing staff, including Krista Bagley (T-11371), a Tradesman Plumber whose Backflow certification provided direct expertise on home sewer system blockages.
How We Chose the Best Drain Cleaner for Grease
Our Master Plumbers established a 5-factor ranking system to create Mother's Drain Cleaning Effectiveness Ranking.
- Kitchen Drain Use. Most grease clogs occur in kitchen drain pipes. We focused our study on this area more than bathroom sinks, toilets or shower drains. We tested these products on PVC pipe and ABS pipe materials.
- Longevity of Effects. The length of time each product continued to work on cooking oil and grease buildup in the plumbing system. We prefer products that homeowners can incorporate into long-term drain maintenance plans.
- Immediacy of Effects. The speed at which each product got to work clearing organic material from the both the drain opening and pipe.
- Effect on Pipe Materials. “We studied if the active ingredients in each drain cleaner damaged the drain opening or drain line as it worked,” Steven explains.
- Potential Health Risks. The listed health and side effects on each product. We also researched any outstanding scientific or medical studies on injuries caused by the active ingredients in each cleaner.
We did not factor cost into our findings. “There's no world where a $10 bottle that can burn you is better than a $40 product that never harms you or your pipes,” Steven concludes.
Overall Findings: Bacteria and Enzymes Are Your Best Choice
Our testing produced tiered results- performance was almost unanimously split into three categories:
- Best Performers: Bacterial Drain Cleaners
- Second Tier: Enzyme Drain Cleaners
- Third Tier (Failing Performers): Chemical Drain Cleaners
What Are Bacterial Drain Cleaners?
Bacterial drain cleaners get a bad rap because of their name. But in our test, bacterial and enzymatic drain cleaners significantly outperformed chemical drain cleaners in performance longevity, elimination of clogged drain issues from grease, and lack of harm to pipes and drains.
“People hear the word bacteria and hate it,” Steven says. “But this is Bacillus bacteria. They only eat dead organic material and they can't survive in the human body. You're completely safe to use them.”
The strains of Bacillus bacteria in products like Endure are non-pathogenic- they can't cause disease or illness. They transform grease clogs into water and carbon dioxide, which pass harmlessly through your plumbing system into the city sewer or septic tanks.
What Are Enzyme Drain Cleaners?
Enzymatic drain cleaners use enzymes- proteins formed by non-pathogenic bacteria. They quickly break down organic matter through a chemical reaction on contact.
“Simple trade-off,” Steven notes. “Enzymes work very fast to clear a clog, faster than bacteria. But the lifespan's not great. It flushes away fast, and when it's gone it's done working.”
Three Problems With Chemical Cleaner Performance
The chemical products we tested fall into two categories: caustic (lye-based) and oxidizing (bleach or peroxide-based). As stated earlier, we cannot recommend any acidic product for household use.
The chemical drain cleaning brands we tested returned three negative results that kept them from the top tiers of our rankings:
- Poor longevity. On average, oxidizing and caustic drain cleaners work on organic clogs for 3-10 days.
- Harsh cleaners. Caustic drain cleaners use lye, which turns organic matter into soap (including your skin). Oxidizing products release toxic gas on accidental contact with ammonia or other cleaners in your drains.
- Plumbing system damage. Incomplete lye cleaning leaves hardened, soapy sludge deeper in your pipes that causes sewer backups. Oxidizers cause rapid, severe corrosion to metal drains and rusting of garbage disposal units.
Endure by American Formula: The Best Grease Drain Cleaner

Endure by American Formula is our highest-rated bacterial cleaner, and the best performing long-term drain cleaner for grease in both our in-office and field studies.
Endure's active ingredient is a proprietary Bacillus bacteria formula. Its composition is engineered to survive contact with bleach, dish soap and boiling water.
“A lot of bacterial products, you pour boiling water down the drain and they stop working,” Steven explains. “Endure can handle up to 180°F and keep working. It survives heavy dish soaps, degreasers, and standard household cleaners that wash away weaker enzymes.”
Endure's live bacteria double in population every 20 minutes, building a biofilm that coats the internal walls of your drain pipe. While the bacteria consume active fat, oil and grease clogs ("FOG clogs"), they also prevent new grease from coating your kitchen sink drains and garbage disposal.
Why Endure by American Formula Won
The product scored highly for long-term grease clog removal, as well as its ability for safe reuse on a monthly basis. We valued its non-pathogenic bacterial composition and zero reliance on caustic chemicals. Our Master Plumbers liked the ability to recommend Endure for homeowners on the city sewer system, as well as those with a septic system.
Endure tied for the longest period of effective grease blocking and removal in our study, at 30 days per application.
Mother's staff renewed its commitment to use Endure in every residential drain cleaning project in our service area.
“We're offering the best long-term answer for maintenance after service,” Steven states. “We hand customers a free bottle before we walk out the door.”
Endure Drain Cleaner: Pros and Cons
Pros:
- 30 days of effectiveness between applications
- Resistant to boiling water, dish soap and all purpose cleaner
- Non-pathogenic Bacillus bacteria
- Best-in-class maintenance capacity for recurring drain issues
- Breaks down grease into harmless water and carbon dioxide
Cons:
- Only available wholesale or direct from plumbing companies
- Slightly higher single-bottle price point than BioOne
BioOne Liquid Drain and Septic Treatment

BioOne Liquid Drain and Septic Treatment emerged as the runner-up in our studies, with a very narrow margin separating it from our top placing product. The gap between Endure and BioOne was smaller than the gap between BioOne and our next-highest finisher.
BioOne's liquid formulation uses a proprietary Pseudomonas bacteria culture, in a vegetative state to begin consuming organic clogs when they enter the plumbing system. Its built-in de-chlorinator prevents the chloramines in tap water from killing the bacteria, which turns grease into a mixture of water and carbon dioxide (like Endure).
BioOne's liquid form is activated when diluted with tap water. A lack of added soaps and enzymes allows the product to work without creating gunky sludge further down the drain pipe.
It was the first microbial product ever recognized by the United States EPA Safer Choice Program for its non-toxic status.
The Best Bacterial Drain Cleaner for Online Purchase
Our Master Plumbers gave BioOne Liquid Drain and Septic Treatment high marks for its online purchase availability.
“The best bacterial cleaners out there- you don't see all of them online,” Steven remarks. “Easy access for homeowners is a good thing.”
The team makes a clear distinction between BioOne's liquid and powder products in its findings. We chose liquid over powder in a pre-screening process for its heightened startup speed and lack of preparation/mixing.
BioOne: Pros and Cons
Pros:
- 30 days of effectiveness between applications
- Non-pathogenic Pseudomonas bacteria culture
- EPA Safer Choice certified
- Resistant to chlorine treatments in incoming water supply
- Available for online purchase
Cons:
- Not resistant to boiling water
- Not as resistant to sanitizer products as Endure
Instant Power Bio-Enzymatic Drain Sticks: The Retail Option

If you have to go to the store to purchase a drain cleaner, our plumbers chose Instant Power Bio-Enzymatic Drain Sticks as the “best retail” option.
Its enzymatic composition lacks the long-term punch of our top-rated bacterial cleaners, and it took just as long (48-72 hours) to reach peak cleaning mode as Endure and BioOne Liquid. But its solid stick form performed far better in real-world grease buildup conditions than liquid enzyme products.
“The sticks are slow to dissolve,” reports Steven. “We got about 24 days of functional use out of each one. Liquid enzymes flush through your system much faster.”
Great for P-Traps and Foul Smelling Sink Drains
The best facet of Instant Power Bio-Enzymatic Drain Stick performance is in keeping the p-trap under your kitchen sink clear and sanitized.
The enzymes release into the standing water of your p-trap and feed on organic waste for weeks. This not only reduces organic clog potential, it gets rid of the smelly biofilm that causes foul odor problems.
The sticks also outperformed chemical drain cleaners against soap scum from bar soap use.
Ultimately, the product won't clear grease clogs and provide long-term maintenance on the level of our top performers. But if smelly sink drains are the primary concern, it's a solid option.
Instant Power Bio-Enzymatic Drain Sticks: Pros and Cons
Pros:
- Non-pathogenic active ingredients and enzymes
- Top performer in p-trap cleaning and odor removal
- Outperformed other enzymatic products
- 24 days of effectiveness between applications
- Available for retail purchase
Cons:
- Lags in active grease clog removal vs. bacterial products
- Less effectiveness in clearing persistent grease issues
- Often trapped in the p-trap basin exclusively
The Three Worst Performing Drain Cleaners for Grease In Our Survey

After a mix of caustic and oxidizing drain cleaning products, we arrive at the three lowest-ranked products in our study. These cleaners failed to sustain results past 10 days, created early signs of pipe degradation with harsh ingredients, and showed potential for consumer injury if contact was made.
Drano Professional Strength Kitchen Crystals Clog Remover
Of the 14 drain cleaning products we tested, there's only one our plumbers urge homeowners to never use.
Drano Professional Strength Kitchen Crystals Clog Remover was an intriguing product due to its crystal composition, so we purchased it for our study alongside Drano Max Gel. We immediately noticed the product description stating that adding water to the can may cause its contents to “violently erupt”.
Further research found the product lingers in kitchen sink drains after use. This causes potential splashback and interaction with other liquids that can cause burns to the eyes and skin, and potential blindness or death.
The Drano kitchen crystals product is potentially so harmful, it made the Environmental Working Group's (EWG) Hall of Shame list of toxic household cleaners.
Instant Power Crystal Lye Drain Opener
Where Instant Power's Bio-Enzymatic Drain Sticks offer a consumer-safe drain solution, their Crystal Lye Drain Opener was the second-worst performer in our 14 product evaluation.
While many liquid caustic drain cleaners dilute their active ingredients with water, this one does not. The product is comprised of 100% pure sodium hydroxide (lye) crystals. No diluting agents, no foaming additives- the manufacturer's product page touts this as a positive.
“If that stuff touches your skin, necrosis happens,” Steven warns. “It turns the fat cells under your skin into soap, just like in Fight Club.”
The other issue with lye-based products is incomplete cleaning risks. Crystal Lye Drain Opener's effectiveness period is incredibly short- less than 5 days in our testing.
“If the grease doesn't break down by then, it re-forms as a brick of soap further down your drain pipe,” Steven continues. “Now you don't need drain cleaning- you need a professional-size drain snake or full-blown sewer cleaning.”
Liquid-Plumr Clog Destroyer
This oxidizing gel uses a highly concentrated form of bleach (sodium hypochlorite) as its active ingredient. Of the 14 products we tested, none caused visible harm to metal drain pipes more than Liquid-Plumr Clog Destroyer.
“We tested these products for 60 days,” Steven notes. “Clog Destroyer never fully eradicated any grease clog, and our in-office test pipe showed early signs of corrosive damage.”
Liquid-Plumr Clog Destroyer's biggest flaw is consumer false confidence. Its active ingredient quickly kills the sticky biofilm coating the inside of drain pipes. This gets rid of the odor in your sink- but not the cause. Oxidizing agents are too weak to do more than break up the edges of a grease blockage, while its core remains.
This held true in our testing. None of our three applications of Clog Destroyer cleared the pipe for more than six days before the clog and its symptoms returned.
Warning: Do not mix oxidizing drain cleaners with acid or vinegar- this creates deadly chlorine gas. If mixed with ammonia, the bleach in these products creates chloramine gas that burns your respiratory tract.
Results: Bacterial Drain Cleaners Are Best Against Grease Clogs
Our top two performing products- Endure by American Formula and BioOne Liquid Drain and Septic Treatment- are both bacterial drain cleaners. Their active, non-toxic ingredients take a bit longer to “start up” than chemical products. But if your situation isn't a sewage emergency, they offer the longest performance period between uses (30 days).
Chemical drain cleaners are more than health and plumbing hazards. They simply don't match bacterial and enzymatic products as long-term performers or maintenance options. While all but one of the chemical products we tested worked faster than bacterial cleaners, none of them continued to work on grease buildup longer than 10 days.
Our Master Plumbers recommend Endure as the top drain cleaner for grease. They use it in residential drain cleaning in Dallas multiple times per week, and provide complimentary bottles of the product to customers after service.

Common Q’s about Drainage Service
What is the difference between enzymatic and bacterial drain cleaners?
Enzyme cleaners contain proteins that quickly break down organic matter on contact, but they wash away immediately after use. Bacterial drain cleaners contain live, non-pathogenic cultures (like Bacillus) that consume grease and multiply. These bacteria actually produce their own enzymes and build a protective biofilm inside your pipes, offering up to 30 days of active grease prevention per application.
Why do plumbers advise against using chemical drain cleaners for grease clogs?
Caustic chemical cleaners contain lye, which reacts with cooking grease through a process called saponification. If the chemical reaction loses its heat before washing the clog away, it literally turns the soft grease into a rock-hard block of soap stuck deep inside your plumbing. Additionally, the boiling exothermic heat generated by these chemicals can warp or melt residential PVC pipes.
Will pouring boiling water down the sink clear a grease clog?
No. While boiling water will temporarily melt grease near the drain opening, the water cools rapidly as it travels deeper into your plumbing. This causes the melted fat to re-solidify further down your main sewer line, creating a much larger blockage that is harder to reach. It's much safer to use a bacterial cleaner that permanently converts the grease into water and carbon dioxide.
Are bacterial drain cleaners safe for my underground sewer line?
Yes, biological and bacterial drain cleaners are highly beneficial for main sewer line maintenance. Unlike bleach or harsh oxidizers that kill the necessary bacterial flora inside a buried pipe, products like Endure or BioOne introduce healthy, non-pathogenic strains that actively help break down and digest the solid waste inside your sewer system.
How much oil can I pour down the drain?
The simple answer: none. You should never pour oil down your sink or any other drain in your house.
