What Is Trenchless Plumbing?
Trenchless plumbing refers to several modern methods of underground pipe repairs that require little to no excavation.
Trenchless technology allows expert plumbers to access, fix and replace damaged underground pipes without tearing up your yard or property. Avoiding excavation doesn’t just save your yard — it saves time and money over traditional open trench repairs.
Most trenchless plumbing repairs apply to 2 large underground pipe systems on your residential property:
- Sewer line: The main line that carries sewage and wastewater away from your home.
- Water line: The pipe that carries new, fresh water into your home from the city water supply and/or your well.
Older, traditional plumbing repair methods required large trenches — these excavations add up to 14 hours of labor costs and 2-3 days to your project scope. DFW plumbing companies that use trenchless sewer repair and water line repair methods avoid all that costly excavation.
4 Key Benefits of Trenchless Plumbing
Call Mother for Dallas-Fort Worth trenchless plumbing repairs.
Trenchless plumbing offers 4 key benefits to Dallas-Fort Worth homeowners:
- Less disruptive work
- Shorter project timeline/faster turnaround
- Lower overall costs
- Less environmental impact
Trenchless plumbing avoids extensive excavation
Traditional plumbing repairs require an open trench along the entire span of your damaged pipe. Trenchless pipe repairs are completed without all that costly and invasive digging.
For example, trenchless pipe bursting only requires two small holes — one at the start of your damaged pipe section, and one at the end. These holes are easily dug up and refilled without causing property damage.
Trenchless pipe repair saves time
The average trenchless project is completed in one appointment, on one day. (The only exception is cured-in-place pipe lining — CIPP requires one extra day for curing.)
By contrast, traditional underground plumbing repair and excavation takes 2-4 days to complete.
Shorter project timelines = you save money
The average DFW resident saves 14 hours of labor costs by choosing trenchless pipe repair over traditional excavation.
Keep in mind that excavation requires you to repair and rehabilitate any landscaping, grass or sod that was destroyed in the digging process. These costly landscape restoration projects add thousands onto your overall plumbing repair bill.
Trenchless technology is more eco-friendly
Less disruption to your property’s soil, lawn and landscaping is better for the environment. The natural ecosystem of your yard remains intact throughout the pipe repair or pipe replacement.
This is especially important in Dallas-Fort Worth and Tarrant County. Our expansive clay soil is more likely to shift, crack and settle than other soil types. The less you disturb that soil during plumbing repairs, the better!
The expert plumbers at Mother Modern Plumbing live and work in the DFW Metroplex. We understand how to work without disrupting your clay soil, your landscaping, and your beautiful backyard space.
The 3 Types of Trenchless Repair Methods
There are 3 primary types of trenchless pipe replacement for sewer lines and water lines: pipe bursting, pipe relining and slip lining.
Each trenchless method has unique pros and cons based on its unique approach to no dig pipe repair.
Our local Dallas plumbers prefer pipe bursting for its minimal invasiveness, quick project turnaround, and ability to adapt to pipes of any size.
What is trenchless pipe bursting?
A new pipe is pulled through your existing pipe using a cone-shaped head pulled by hydraulics.
This hydraulic cone bursts your old pipe as it simultaneously lays the new pipe in its place. The new pipe is then welded above ground. Fast, effective and virtually no digging!

What is pipe relining?
Pipe relining involves inserting a flexible liner into your damaged pipe section. This resin-coated liner is inflated, exposed to heat and cured into place within your old pipe. Any excess liner is trimmed and removed.
Most pipe relining projects are cured-in-place piping (CIPP). CIPP lining is great for smaller pipes, but is less effective for large pipes and extensive damage. Allow an extra day for curing to take place vs. other trenchless repair options.
What is slip lining?
A small carrier pipe is inserted in your existing water line. This pipe is slipped through and grouted into place within the old pipe. While it's extremely fast and minimally invasive, you are left with reduced water flow capacity.
Slip lining is not recommended for water lines with extensive damage, or for large sewer line replacement.
